Carole McLeod

February 12, 1944 — April 25, 2025

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Carole J. McLeod on April 25, 2025 at the Drayton Valley Hospital and Care Centre.

Carole was born on February 12, 1944 in Prince George, BC and was raised in Hinton, AB. She grew up on the family farm, riding and training horses from a young age and loved the cowboy way of life.

Carole met the love of her life, Ross McLeod when he was employed catching wild horses on the land adjacent to her family’s farm. They married on Aug 31, 1963 and spent the first several years of their marriage working at different ranches and cowboy jobs, including managing the Buck Mountain Grazing Reserve. Ross and Carole later settled in the Buck Lake area and it has been her home for the past 50 years.

Carole had a lifelong love for horses and animals. She spent many years showing and selling dogs she raised, as well as breeding and showing miniature horses. Her days were filled with the care, companionship and the joy she found in her animals. Carole was also an accomplished sewer and craftswomen. She spent decades running Carmac Creations, selling custom leatherwork, tack and harnesses for horses of all sizes. In her later years, she spent much of her time sewing and creating beautiful quilts and other projects that are enjoyed by her family and friends.

Carole shared a special bond with her grandson Jeff, who followed in her footsteps as a saddle maker and shared her love of horses and cowboy life. She enjoyed being a part his family’s life and adored his children- Caleb, Chloe and Piper. Their love and support meant the world to her and they were a special joy in her life.

Carole is predeceased by her husband, Ross McLeod; her parents Art and Clara Allen, her sister Brenda Allen and half bothers Les Prosser & Keith Prosser.

She is survived by her daughter Charlene (Robin) Wheale; grandchildren Jeffrey (Krista) Wheale, Erin (Steve) Schoepfner, Trever Wheale, and Mark (Jaime) Wheale; great-grandchildren Caleb, Chloe, Piper, Allison, Dayna, Luke, Ellie-Mae and Lily; Sister Linda (Lynn) Hokanson and several nieces and nephews.

She will also be fondly remembered by her good friends Connie Jensen and Edwin Erickson, who were a great source of friendship over the years. As well as other neighbors and friends she made in the last 50 years living in the Buck Lake area.

Carole’s quiet strength, independence, humor, love of animals and connections she shared with those she was close to, will be remembered fondly.

As per Carole’s wishes, no formal service will take place. Her family wishes to extended a heartfelt thanks to all the nurses and staff at the Drayton Valley Hospital for their kindness, care and compassion over the past week.
