Evelynne (Evie) Evans, our mom, grandma, GG, sister, aunt, and friend died peacefully on September 14th, after a life defined by humour, true grit, and a resilient heart.Born on February 12, 1944, to Amy and A.E. McKay in Alderwood, Ontario, Mom lived a life driven by spirit and determination, an independent woman who built her own path, loved her family deeply, found joy at her cabin in the company of her dogs and her dearest friends, and filled every room with stories only she could tell.

As a mother, Mom was loving and supportive. She cared deeply about her family and showed her love in countless ways, often by simply being there when we needed her. Her strength, determination, and generosity are qualities that will remain part of the family she leaves behind.

As a business owner, she built a successful property management enterprise through years of hard work, determination, and perseverance. She was proud of what she accomplished, and she had every reason to be. She was capable, resourceful, and if something needed to be done, Mom usually found a way to do it.

Independence was one of the things that defined her. She knew what she wanted, made her own decisions, and lived life on her own terms. She remained strong, determined, and independent right to the very end.

Mom had a wonderful sense of humour, and you could never be entirely sure whether she was telling you a story exactly as it happened or adding just enough to make it more interesting and that was part of the fun.

Some of Mom’s happiest times were spent at the cabin, her own little piece of heaven. She loved the quiet, the garden, the nature around her, and the peace it brought.

She adored her dogs, with Annie as her most recent companion. And she had an unforgettable love for roosters, a passion that led to what may have been the world’s largest collection under one roof. Mom never did anything halfway.

And then there was Vegas.

Mom was a proud winter resident of Las Vegas, where she discovered endless happiness. Here, she was embraced by a circle of friends who became like family, forming meaningful friendships she held close to her heart. The casino was where she played, but home was where her heart was fullest.

Evie was predeceased by her husband, Ian Cocks, and her siblings June Bennett, Doreen Wilson, Betty-Ann Taylor, and Albert McKay.

She leaves behind her children, Cathy (Andrew) and Paul; granddaughter Elizah; and great-grandchildren Avery, Dawson, and Ellie-Mae.

I will miss the rare quiet moments we shared, resting our heads together, surrounded by the gentle comfort of her familiar scent that always felt like home.

Mom lived a life shaped by her own will and one she could be deeply proud of. There will never be another quite like her.

She will be deeply missed, and knowing Mom, she would probably prefer that we raise a glass, tell a good story, have a laugh, and maybe pull the lever on a slot machine in her honour. A pretty fitting way to remember Evie.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date, when we will gather to scatter her ashes along a path at her cabin, returning her to a place she cherished.
