Horst Boehm, a beloved pillar of the Drayton Valley community, passed away on January 2, 2026, at the Drayton Valley Hospital. He was born on July 8, 1934, in Germany, where his journey through life began. In 1957, seeking new horizons, he immigrated to Canada, laying the groundwork for a vibrant future. Just three years later, love called him back to Germany, where he married his soulmate, Balbine, in 1960, before returning together to Canada, where they would build a life filled with love and laughter.

Horst was a proud entrepreneur, owning and operating H & B Plumbing for many years. His dedication to his craft was matched only by his warm heart and infectious humor; he was known for always having a joke ready, a trait that made him a cherished friend and neighbor. Horst’s laughter echoed through the halls of his family's lives, weaving a rich tapestry of joy and memory.

After a rewarding career, he embraced retirement on the picturesque Vancouver Island, where his passion for gardening and the great outdoors flourished. Horst spent 15 idyllic years cultivating both plants and friendships amidst the island's breathtaking scenery. Eventually, the call of family brought him and Balbine back to Drayton Valley, ensuring that they remained close to their loved ones.

His proudest accomplishments embodied a spirit of resilience and dedication. Horst earned a black belt in Judo, becoming the Alberta champion in 1959. His commitment to the sport continued as he became a respected Sensei, guiding and inspiring the next generation of Judo enthusiasts in Drayton Valley and its surrounding areas.

Horst is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Balbine; their beloved daughter, Jenny Klotz; sons David (Marilyn) Boehm and Michael Boehm; and four cherished grandchildren—Nicole and Kevin Klotz, Tyler Boehm, and Karly (Brayden) Saskiw. The family's joy further blossomed with the arrival of Grayson Klotz, his adored great-grandson. Horst also leaves behind his siblings Christine, Werner, and Monica, who will remember him with fondness.

He was predeceased by his parents, Walter Martin and Martha Boehm, along with siblings Herta, Hartmut Hans, Herbert, and Gerhard, who are surely welcoming him with open arms.

When we gather to celebrate the remarkable life of Horst Boehm, we remember the laughter he brought into our lives, the love he shared so generously, and the legacy he leaves in the hearts of everyone he touched.

The Boehm family gratefully acknowledges the care and attention that Horst received from doctors, nurses and ambulance staff in addition to all the staff at Seasons Retirement Community.
