What Are Military Death Benefits?

There are many benefits for deceased Veterans. There is the unused leave entitlement and travel benefits for next of kin to attend the funeral. A burial benefits are designed to assist members, veterans, and their families plan and pay for a burial or memorial service. There are survivor benefits for children and the spouse of members.

Federal Public Service Employment - Spousal Priority Entitlement Benefit for Surviving Spouses and Partners

Surviving spouses or common-law partners of members whose death is attributable to the performance of duties can make a request to be considered for this entitlement. Surviving spouses or common-law partners of deceased CAF members are eligible to request priority entitlement if their spouse/common-law partner was:

  • a member of the Regular Force,
  • a member of the Special Force; or
  • a member on Class “A”, “B” or “C” service in the Reserve Force.

and that the following provisions are met:

  • the death of their spouse or common-law partner was attributable to the performance of duties and occurred on or after 7 October 2001; and
  • they are qualified under a federally or provincially legislated plan for compensation as a result of the death of their spouse or common-law partner having been determined as being attributable to the performance of duties. In the case of CAF members, this compensation is the awarding of the Death Benefit by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC).



Supplementary Death Benefit—Canadian Armed Forces pensions

                                                                                                                                                                                                                          This plan is specific to the following audiences:

  • Regular Force members who enrolled before March 1, 2007
  • Regular Force members who enrolled on or after March 1, 2007
  • Members of the Reserve Force on Class "C" service
  • Active members who contribute to the Supplementary Death Benefit (SDB) plan



Who participates in the Supplementary Death Benefit plan?


Regular Force members and Class "C" Reserve members who are serving or receiving a pension are eligible to participate in the Supplementary Death Benefit (SDB) plan.
